Hello, I'm Dr. Alicia Taylor. Hey, I'm Dr. Brittany Helford and we are your money best friends. We're here to share tips on how to manage your money with confidence and build wealth along the way. Yeah, that's right. Welcome to our wealth minded MD podcast. And yes, our podcast is much more than Roth IRAs and debt paid down strategies hold on Leisha, because, you know, I like Roth IRAs. Right. I know you do. I know you do. Brittany, a lot of people like Roth IRAs. They are useful tools. But our podcast is going to be so much more than that. Okay, to share. In our podcast, we're going to share our money mishaps. We're going to teach you about money, how to apply the information that you hear and give you permission to have fun. Leisha, that sounds great. And I'm honored to be the co host of this podcast. Let me introduce myself. I am Brittany with only an E, no Y. Oh my goodness, she's talking to me because I misspelled her name. Once I put the Y at the end, a lot of people swell Brittany with the why my dad won't happen again. No problem. I hail from Flint, Michigan and I grew up in a single parent household where we really didn't talk about money unless it was about how good of a deal you got. Because we're all about the deals. Let me tell you, my mother is so money savvy that she would ask for a discount at the dollar store. But unfortunately, her money savviness did not protect me from student loan debt. And when I graduated from Northwestern and paid off all of my student loan debt, it was 138,000. But I paid it off in two years and nine months. So I am so happy to be done with that debt. Oh my goodness, Leisha, I realized that I'm bragging a little bit and that you're still in the trenches of your debt. So so my apologies, no, no, no, because you're not really sorry. So you know, but it's okay. If it's okay. You know, if I had paid off all my student loan debt, I would be saying the same thing. But thankfully, you know, I am enrolled in a student loan forgiveness program. And so within a few more years, my student loans too, will be out of my life. And I can't wait for that to happen. But you know, while I'm still making these minimum student loan payments, I'm also investing money. And I have a vested interest and passion for helping physicians do the same thing. Now, Alicia, I know that you have a background in finance, do you mind telling the audience a little bit about how this all started for you? Yeah, I'd love to, you know, I actually spent some time working at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington, DC, I was doing conference calls within Vice President Joe Biden, it was super cool. I loved my time in DC, I also spent some time working in private equity. And so it was me and the partners investing pension fund money and retirement fund money for different companies. So that was super fun. But then I realized, okay, if I'm actually serious about becoming a physician, I really need to go to medical school. And, you know, to be honest, I've always had this fascination with medicine, I've always wanted to give people second chances through medicine, and being a physician was the way that I really wanted to do that. And I mentioned this, because while I was in medical school, is when I had this epiphany that I might be able to merge both of these things together, my love for medicine, and my love for finance. You know, when I was in medical school, my classmates kept asking me a lot of questions about personal finance, what's a Roth IRA? How do I start investing? What is the information that I need to be able to buy a home, and I kept answering their questions, and you know, my own money savvy sort of way, it kind of grew from there. But I will say the thing that really changed my life was when I realized that a lot of the physicians that I cared about, a lot of the physicians at my institution at that time, were being taken advantage of, you know, they didn't know as much about money, and they decided they were going to hire out that portion. And so they spent money and time building a financial team, whether it's a team of insurance agents and financial advisors, they didn't realize that the financial advisor didn't have their best interests at heart, they didn't realize that they were being forced to buy really expensive insurance products that they may not have needed. They didn't realize that the person that they chose to invest their money wasn't doing a good job, and that their investments were actually underperforming the market. So there's all of these instances in which the physicians that I cared about the physicians that I knew of, were being taken advantage of. And I got really angry about that, you know, I then got on this personal quest and mission to be like, I don't want that to happen anymore. I want to help physicians to thrive, I want to give physicians the tools and the information, the knowledge that they need to be able to take charge of their finances. And this has really expanded out beyond physicians, you know, I have lots of friends who aren't in medicine, and I want to help them too. I want to help you all too. And I think that this for me, is kind of where it all stemmed from. So good. So good. So you got into sharing your story teaching physicians about money because you had that background and your friends needed some free advice, but then you saw that this is actually a need that extended past your inner circle. Yeah. And that you wanted to fix a problem that was more impactful, not just for money, confidence or numerical perspective, but that you wanted physicians to start to have this empowered approach to managing their own finances. I love that. And when I think about like my own journey to money coaching, I started to share my story of how I pay down my debt. And women asked me how I did it. So I told them, and then there is a question of, are you willing to be my money coach? And of course, I didn't say no, because I have this desire to, to help other women. Because women, unfortunately, we just haven't had the time to practice money and get really good at it. And unfortunately, sometimes we just need somebody else to tell us that we're capable. What I've heard from a lot of women is that they have guilt and shame, especially when they carry debt around their finances, and that there is not a trusted source of information similarly to your story. Yeah. So I guess you can say that we're two women in healthcare, who are about their money and want you to be too. And that's kind of why we created this podcast, you know, because we know that a lot of women in healthcare still earn less than men still have a lot of debt, feel shame about the debt that they have feel guilty about the money that they have, or just are unsure how to invest. And we want to change that. Yeah, we want to give women more options. We want you to have autonomy, over how you live, how you spend your time and how you work. So in this podcast, we're bringing the fun to your earbuds because who said money can't be enjoyable. So here's a breakdown of what you could hear. And each of our wealth minded MD podcast episodes.
